Update on #3
Bird #3 was acting strange. Our falcon rehabbber said it was best to try to get him out and evaluated. Bob attempted to open box and throw a towel. Bird flew out and took a good flight, has been captured and taken to rehab. More news later.
WOW. . thanks for that info. . I've been gone all day so didn't have the cam up. I do hope he/she is ok. I am so glad that s/he is now in the safe hands of a rehabber. Hopefully it will be something as simple as dehydration.
I hadn't thought of dehydration, but that's a pretty good likelihood. It's been so hot for the past week, and the babies don't seem to eat as much just prior to fledging. Hoping for the best!
I also noticed the bird acting strange. mom came to feed and it just laid there. next time i looked bird was gone and mom came back and was squawking and flying in and out and around the next box. Also what happened to bird #1 primo. have never heard anything of him. also was sad to hear about macy.
From what I heard from Bob a couple of hours ago Boxer seems to be doing great and they didn't find anything wrong in any of the exams or x-rays. She was really throwing herself around violently in the box to the point of knocking the camera--that behavior began at 6:30 am and continued throughout the morning until she laid down in the corner. Even mom was acting a little weird, flying back and forth from the box, perching on top of the box and on each side. The rehaber and a vet both recommended taking a look at her and who would have guessed that she'd jump up and take off. Who knows what caused that thrashing but all seems to be well.
Is there video somewhere of Boxer doing this? (darn, sure wish I had been recording the cam at the time) I've watched plenty of PeFa cams and have seen what sounds like similar behavior with the kids .. especially when they know a parent is near. I've seen chicks literally climb the walls of the box if they know a parent or sibling is on the other side. Its fairly common. Also, if mom was zipping around in the box, that's pretty common to, especially if she is being chased by one of the kids. Of course, I didn't personally see this behavior this morning, so I'm not sure if that was what was going on. Also, if you look at some of Liz's pics, that's a pretty narrow looking ledge. I'm not sure how long or wide it is but if a kid chases a parent on that ledge you could really risk a slip off or an early fledge and that could be more harmful than a chick trying to climb the sides of the box. I'm just thankful that Boxer is ok. With the heat she just probably wore herself out after going crazy in the box and plopped down. prior to fledge, there were several instances when a parent brought in food and the kids never budged. At first I got really worried, thinking the heat had gotten to them, but once it cooled off and was later in the day, they were up and flapping like mad. .

I noticed Boxer flying up and hitting the sides of the nesting box almost in a panic earlier. Then Boxer was gone. Thanks for the updates!
